Si Gung Derek Johnson started learning Jow Ga Kung Fu in 1978 at Master Dean Chin’s school in Washington D.C. Chinatown. His primary instructor and mentor in the school was Sifu Deric Mims, who was the senior instructor. Unfortunately, Master Chin passed away in 1985. His Grand Master or Si Gung is Chan Man Cheung of Hong Kong, who was a disciple of Great Grand Master Jow Biu introduced Si Gung Johnson to his next Jow Ga teacher Master Kong Yu Choi from the Jow Biu Chinese boxing Association of Hong Kong. Master Kong’s Sifu is Grand Master Hung Tai Wai, of Hong Kong, who was a classmate of Chan Man Cheung and also a disciple of Jow Biu. Grand Master Hung graciously accepted Si Gung Johnson into their family, while encouraging his training.
In 1998, Si Gung Johnson opened two schools known as the Jow Ga Kung Fu Athletic Association. The first school was opened in the United States and the second school was opened later the same year in Krakow, Poland. Most recently, Si Gung Johnson proudly announced the opening of our school, U.S. Jow Ga Martial Arts and also the Kong Yu Choi Jow Ga Memorial Association. Si Gung Johnson and his students have hosted Five Kung Fu tournaments known as “The Jow Ga Five Tigers All Kung Fu Championship” in honor of Jow Ga’s famous founders known as “The Jow Ga Five Tigers”, Jow Lung, Jow Hip, Jow Biu, Jow Hoi, and Jow Tin.
